Open iPad GarageBand projects on your Mac

Songs created with the iPad version of GarageBand can not be opened with the Mac version (at least not at the time of writing). I've found a kludgy workaround that will allow you to open at least part of your project on your Mac.

Basically you just need to edit the version number embedded in the project file. I've posted the full step-by-step details to my blog.

Here are the steps:
  • Right-click a project and select 'Show Package Contents.'
  • Find the projectData file and open it with the Plist Editor (or a text editor if you don't have the Developer Tools installed).
  • Find the version key with the value 45000 and change that to 40000.
  • Save the file.
That's it! The project will now open, albeit with a bunch of warning messages and certain things ...

The Difference a Device Makes: How the iPhone Saved Fon

Make event emails sent from 10.6 iCal Server come from actual user

In Server Admin, the iCal settings allow you to specify a single email from which event invitations will come. For a personal calendar though, you really want the email to come from your own email.

The script which sends invitations is found at:

/usr/share/caldavd/lib/python/twistedcaldav/mail.py

It appears that it tries to find the appropriate email address, but I could not figure out how to make a value ever be present where it was looking.

So, I modified the script as shown below. Change:
  if organizer.startswith("mailto:"):   orgEmail = fromAddr = organizer[7:]  else:   fromAddr = serverAddress   orgEmail = None  cn = calendar.getOrganizerProperty().params().get('CN', (None,))[0]
To: ...

Apperian picks up first enterprise iFund payout

The iFund has been pretty influential ever since it was announced a couple years ago -- it's a pool of money set up by Apple and a few other companies to support and grow companies that are contributing to the iOS ecosystem.

It's been growing along with Apple's platform, and now the fund has made its first contribution to an enterprise developer. Apperian is a company that helps enterprises create and deploy their own mobile apps, and it's picked up $9.5 million in a round of funding that includes money from the iFund.

We've covered the use of iPhone and iPad in business quite a bit, and Apperian sits squarely in that wheelhouse, consulting with various companies on how to create and securely distribute their own mobile apps. iFund's Matt Murphy says that Apperian is riding the wave of mobile devices that are showing up in the corporate workplace, and that "Apperian's solution is perfectly timed to help enterprises rollout and manage all their applications across their employee base and its wide variety of smart devices."

Sounds like a solid plan. It's excellent to see Apple's platform growing in all kinds of different directions.

Analyst: Apple could take 'more conservative' outlook on Q3

Apple could be "more conservative than usual" when guiding investors on its fiscal third quarter, which ends in June, says Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves. "We believe supply disruptions in Japan have left the channel with as little as two months of inventory of key components for iPad and iPhone," he writes in an investment memo. "If supply is not brought back online quickly and Apple is unable to find alternatives, then iPad and iPhone production could be meaningfully impaired in the second half of fiscal Q3."...

Speed up by disabling Screen Sharing

I am trying to squeeze some more speed out of my Mac, as it is necessary for me to also use a Windows emulator on it.

I have tried to clean up things, and I noticed that when I turned off the three following launchd processess, with the free utility Lingon, at least it appeared to run marginally faster.
  • Start Lingon (google Lingon downloads).
  • Find the processes listed below in the lowest three groups in Lingon's sidebar.
  • Select, Disable, Save, and Confirm with your Administrator password for each of them.
